Abstract:
This article is devoted to the study of the history of education and the reasons that pushed humanity to build reservoirs. Our research was conducted through two components: 1) the history of the construction of reservoirs; 2) the main milestones in the construction of reservoirs in Ukraine, their general characteristics and scientific developments.

In the first part of this article, a historical cut to the approaches and classifications of these unit water bodies is implemented: typification after genesis, geographic location, configuration; the classification of reservoirs for volume, area and depth, the nature of flow regulation, the depth of water level production, water exchange, hydrochemical and hydrobiological indicators, and so on.

In the second component, the author before the reader reveals in general terms the history of the construction of reservoirs on the territory of Ukraine at different times. Here, in more detail, we consider the distribution of these artificial reservoirs, namely: on the main rivers and regions of Ukraine. The author focuses attention on the historical section of the scientific developments of Ukrainian researchers of the hydrology of the land, which carried out significant advances in applied and theoretical nature in the development of this particular scientific direction. Attention is paid to the formation of the first unit, which began the training of hydrological specialists from this field of science – the Department of Geographical Direction at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and its scientific developments in the field of land hydrology.

The modern views of Ukrainian researchers of these water artificial objects for their near future in Ukraine are highlighted.
