GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS OF THE TRANSFORMATION OF INDUSTRY OF THE SUMY REGION AT THE BEGINNING OF THE XXI CENTURY

Abstract:
Transformation of the industrial and territorial structure of the industry in the Sumy region is considered. The shares of certain industries of the region in the value of manufactured industrial products have been analyzed, their dynamics has been clarified. The leading role (62% of the value of the sold products) belongs to the manufacturing industry. In the structure of the latter, the leading role belongs to the food industry (18.7%), machine-building (14.7%), and chemical industry (14.8%).

The reduction of the percentage of the industry in the structure of the gross added value which created in the region, as well as in the employment structure of the population of the Sumy region has been established, which indicates deindustrialization of the regional economy. For the years 2005-2008 the percentage of workers employed in the region’s industry has decreased from 28.9% to 27.09%, and for 2009-2012 this figure was further reduced ­– up to 26.15% of all employed in the economy. In 2006, the average annual number of employees in the industry was amounted to 101.3 thousand people and decreased compared to 1990 more than half. If in 1996 industry accounted for 52.9% of the gross output of the material production sectors, but in 2001 this share was fell to 41.5%. Similarly, the share of industry in the Sumy region in the structure of the gross added value was changed – if in 2005 the industry accounted for 32.08% of the gross added value created, in 2012 – only 28.6%

It is also established that the food industry now is the main branch of manufacturing industry, but the machine-building industry, which for a long time had the largest percentage in industry, both in terms of the cost of production and the number of workers, moved to the third place, skip ahead of the chemical industry. The depletion and dilution of the territorial and branches structure of the industrial complex of the region were investigated. From the economic map of the region were disappear the enterprises that specialized in electronic and optical engineering, automotive, machine-tool construction, lost significant engineering machinery, sugar, canned fruit and vegetables industry, and this list can continue.
