Abstract:
The state of the Tulchin landfill was investigated. The impact of Tulchin municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill on the environment and human health was analyzed by means of a geo-ecological method based on the landscape-geochemical approach and basin-based migration of pollutants. Typical for Ukrainian landfills hazardous waste and contaminants in their composition were described. Forecasted chemical pollutants in the leachate from the Tulchin landfill are indicated. The hydrological structure of the territory around the Tuchin landfill was constructed. The ways of migration of heavy metals in the composition of filtration waters from Tulchin MSW landfill to the environment was applied. Based on a large-scale soil analysis, soil pH within the geocosystem of the Tulchin landfill was investigated. The dependence of the migratory ability of pollutants on the pH value is considered. Landscape-geochemical barriers as probable places of water-soluble forms of heavy metals accumulation were identified by means of landscape-geochemical approach and basin principle of groundwater protection. Heavy metals which are totally or partially accumulating on the landscape-geochemical barriers are defined. Map of landscape geochemical barriers within the Tulchin landfill geoecosystem was compiled. Land use within the geoecosystem of the Tulchin landfill and agricultural crops were determined using geodata and satellite images. The experience of European countries in the use of phytoremediation technologies for land reclamation was analyzed. The advantages of phytoremediation technology were showed and the most important criteria for the selection of plants for phytoremediation were noted. Recommendations are given on the introduction of phytoremediation technology for cleaning Tulchin landfill, neighbouring agricultural land and reducing the risk of contamination of trophic chains. Plants that can accumulate the largest number of typical pollutants were identified. Sunflower and corn were proposed as possible species for phytoremediation on the territory of Tulchin landfill geoecosystem.
